New Law Restricting Ownership of 'Dangerous' Dog Breeds Goes Into Effe

A new law prohibiting the ownership of a majority of dog breeds as pets has been passed. The law also comes with strict regulations for pet ownership, as well as fines for owners of banned breeds.

Pet owners, including those with banned dog breeds and other animals that have been ruled as dangerous, must now register their pets for inspection in order to be eligible for a license.

The law permits 10 select breeds without safety inspections, including the Cocker Spaniel, Labradors, Poodles, Malinois, Pomeranians, Jack Russell terriers, Great Danes, White German Shepherds, Maltese and Samoyeds. The law imposes strict regulations on other breeds - including Pit bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds - such as frequent inspections and checkups.

Pet owners are required to pay a fee of EGP 50,000 to the General Organization for Veterinary Services to be eligible for the license, while dog owners who refuse to abide by the new law will face an EGP 10,000 fine. Additionally, dogs deemed unsafe will be confiscated by public veterinarians, with specific details undisclosed so far.
