Ministry of Health Declares Egypt First Nation to Wipe Out Hepatitis C

The Ministry of Health and Population has announced that Egypt is one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C, thanks in large part to the ‘100 Million Healthy Lives’ initiative, which campaigned for early detection of hepatitis C and non-communicable diseases.

As recently as 2017, Egypt was thought to have one of the highest prevalence of hepatitis C in the world. In 2015, about 5.5 million Egyptian citizens were diagnosed with chronic infection. After the launch of their campaign in May 2018, the Ministry of Health and Population received international acclaim from the World Health Organisation for providing free services to Egyptian citizens. The ‘100 Million Healthy Lives’ initiative has so far provided 49,630,319 people with medical services in line with international treatment protocols, making it one of the largest disease detection campaigns in history.
