Ministry of Environment Says Bizarre Blue Whale Videos Most Likely Fake

The Ministry of Environment has denied the validity of strange videos showing the alleged sounds of blue whales off the coasts of Marsa Matrouh, Algeria and Libya. The videos went viral on Twitter on Thursday and depicted an odd low-frequency wail, with the spectators expressing total disbelief at what they were supposedly hearing. Social media users were taken aback by these videos, especially considering the fact that blue whales inhabit oceans, not seas.

According to Youm7, the Ministry of Environment released a statement saying that the videos were most likely fabricated because no whales were officially spotted in the North Coast. They also commented on the audio in the recording, confirming that the wails are inconsistent with the way whales communicate with each other. Whale noises are too low-frequency for the human ear to pick up without special equipment, which suggests that the video's sounds have been faked. While several types of whales do live in the Mediterranean sea, the blue whale is not counted among them. The Ministry urged Egyptians to avoid disturbing any other type of whale if they do encounter them in the wild and stressed that they are not harmful to humans.

Known as the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth, blue whales can generally be found in all of the world's oceans. They can usually be spotted migrating to the Equator during the winter. In ideal conditions, their sounds can extend to 1000 miles away. Many marine biologists share the opinion that whales do not only make sounds for communication purposes but can also use sonar to navigate the oceans.
