Mashhad al-Tabataba Mausoleum Moved to NMEC

Mashhad al-Tabataba, also known as the Tabataba shrine at Ain el-Sira lake, has been relocated to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The shrine was under threat of flooding after 22 years of leakages at Ain el-Sira lake, where the sulphuric waters reached 2.70 metres.

The Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities financed the project, which began in January 2021 and cost EGP six million.

The Tabataba shrine is one of the few remnants of the Ikhshidid dynasty, which ruled Egypt from 935 to 969. Built by Mamluk soldier-turned-governor Muhammad ibn Tughj al-Ikhshid, the shrine contains a mausoleum within six of its chambers.
