Kafr El-Sheikh University Opens 306 Online Classes to Tackle Adult Illiteracy

While the literacy rate has been steadily increasing over the past few decades, there's an argument that it has slowed down. Looking at the statistics from UNESCO, while you can see dramatic jumps in adult literacy between the 1970s and 1980s from 38% to 44%, and then again between 1996 and 2005 from 55% to 71%, Egypt seems to have hit a wall that persisted to at least 2017, where the adult literacy rate remains at around 71%. You'd think with all our education and technology, we'd have a bit more exponential growth there.

Creating new ground in an effort to eliminate adult illiteracy, Kafr El-Sheikh University has opened 306 new online classes in July, reaching 1,400 students and making education more accessible to them - even when the Coronavirus stops classes from being able to come together physically.

Established in 2006, Khafr El-Sheikh University has recently been ranked the fifth best university in Egypt by Times Higher Education.
