July to Officially Become Egyptian Heritage Month in Canada

Following the submission of a bill in May 2019, the Legislative Assembly of Canadian Province, Ontario, has officially approved July as Egyptian Heritage Month, as reported by Egypt Today. Eventually, the month will be made official in other provinces around Canada, too.

The submission was made by Canadian MP of Egyptian origin, Sherif Sabrawy, and has been backed by Egypt's Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, Nabila Makram, as well as Minister of Antiquities, Khaled al-Anany, and Minister of Culture, Inas Abdel Dayem.

The preamble of the bill (which establishes a rationale or context) states:

As the birthplace to some of the world’s first civilizations, Egypt has thousands of years of history and has seen hundreds of different empires, kingdoms and cultures. Egypt’s history is rich with many complex and unique cultures and empires.

Canada is home to hundreds of thousands of Egyptian-Canadians who contribute to the economy, culture and advancement of Canada and Ontario through substantial contributions to many fields, including academia, medicine, pharmacy, nuclear energy, aviation, engineering and many trades and businesses.

Though details of how the month will be marked are yet to be disclosed, lectures on Egyptian history, a campaign to invite Canadians to visit Egypt and setting-up a cultural convoy to create and host events are rumoured to have been discussed.
