India Becomes a New Source of Wheat for Egyptians

Following the disruption in Egypt's wheat supply by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India has been added to the list of nations that will act as alternative wheat sources.

Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer, mainly due to our massive population and our high intake of bread, a staple food for Egyptians. 80% of our wheat comes from Russia and Ukraine; wheat exports from these two countries account for a third of all wheat exports worldwide. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) in 2020, Egypt imports 12 to 13 million tonnes of wheat per year.
