Hend Sabry Resigns as UN Goodwill Ambassador Due to Genocide in Gaza

Egyptian-Tunisian actress Hend Sabry resigns as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) after 13 years, citing the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

In a concise statement, Sabry expresses deep sorrow, emphasizing her pride in her role and the lessons learned saying, “I was confident that the World Food Programme - recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize just three years ago - would use its voice forcefully, as it successfully did in various emergencies and humanitarian crises. However, starvation and siege have been employed as weapons of war over the past forty-six days against over two million civilians in Gaza, despite the active role the program played in UN Resolution 2417 condemning the use of starvation as a war tactic.”

Witnessing the struggles of her dedicated colleagues in Gaza, Sabry also highlights their inability to fulfil duties due to the devastating war. She aimed, as an ambassador, to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and prevent the use of starvation as a war tactic.

The actress stated that despite the WFP's condemnation of such war crimes, the stark reality persists, leading to over 14,000 casualties and 1.6 million people displaced. Sabry concludes her resignation by vowing to maintain her commitment to humanitarian and social causes in the Arab world.
