Four hour roadtrip! The new Cairo-Sharm road has officially opened

A new road was inaugurated yesterday, November 5th, which will shorten the drive between Cairo and Sharm El-Sheikh to four hours. Khaled Fouda, the Governor of South Sinai, praised the new road as a great step towards greater quality and ease of travel through the province.

The new road begins at the Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel, and runs past the Gulf of Suez cities, including the capital city of Tur Sinai. The road avoids the cities, so as not to congest the residential and commercial areas in them.

It's easy to imagine that the new road is designed with the perfect roadtrip in mind: the journey is riddled with gas stations, with seven going one way and seven down the other, so there are 14 gas stations overall. Ambulance points can be frequently found as well to help keep those freak accidents in check. The streets are also wide, with three lanes for each direction. Whether that's wide enough for the typical Egyptian traffic remains to be seen, but with how much has been invested in this road, we'd certainly hope so!

The new road is part of a larger series of infrastructure projects in the Suez and South Sinai governates, including 239 buildings that contain 3,700 social housing units in the cities of Abuznima, al-Tur and Nuweiba.
