Environmental Campaign in Egypt Seizes 10 Hunters' Dens in Jebel Qatrani in Fayoum

As part of a broader effort to protect the country's wildlife and enforce the laws that preserve biodiversity and ensure the safety of migratory birds, Egypt's Ministry of Environment recently launched an extensive inspection campaign around Fayoum's Jebel Qatrani. The campaign resulted in the seizure of 10 hunters' dens.

The paleontological and geological formation located in Central Egypt is known to have an abundance of unique bird species rarely found in the region, and that naturally calls for the unwanted attention of bird poachers. Birds most popularly targeted in the area include the Shoveler Ducks and the Greater Flamingo.

The dens, which have been traced and demolished, were owned by falconers and wild bird hunters. Some of the dens also contained a variety of illegal fishing tools, the ministry said in a statement.

The campaign aims to raise environmental awareness among citizens and calls for the participation of all parties in environmental protection, as well as the stopping of the hunting in Egypt, lest they get subjected to legal accountability for violating environmental laws.

The Ministry of Environment has opened a channel for communication. Whether it's an inquiry about Egypt's wildlife or to report illegal trade and hunting, you can contact them through this hotline: 19808.

If you're interested in the birds of Egypt, Egyptian conservationist and wildlife photographer Watter Al Bahry will be holding a talk on the subject tomorrow at 6PM. The talk is titled 'Wings of Egypt', and it will be hosted at the Astrotrips headquarters.

Did you know that there were as many as ten hunters' dens in Qatrani alone?
