Entrepreneur Plans to Open First Halal Sex Shop in Mecca

For millions of Muslims, Mecca is the holiest city on Earth. Every day Muslims around the world pray in its direction, and every year millions flock there to perform Hajj. It is no secret that Saudi Arabia is a very conservative country, which is why it comes a complete shock that news is spreading that a Moroccan entrepreneur is putting forth plans to open the first ‘halal’ sex shop in the holy city.

The story originates from the Arabic news channel Alyaoum24 and has been picked up by several international news site like The Huffington Post. If you're anything like us, you clicked on this because you have no idea what constitutes a 'halal' sex shop. According to comments reported by Alyaoum24, Abdelaziz Aouragh explain that the shop will not be stocking sex toys or pornos but will have plenty of items to “increase feelings of sensuality and to improve the atmosphere between the couple.”

Having already established an online Arabic sex shop called El Asira, Aouragh hope to continue dispelling the stereotypes of Muslim women saying; “It is not true that Muslim women are seen only in the kitchen and seen only wearing the veil. We should also highlight love.” The entrepreneur claims the shop will be fully compliant with Shariah law, and says that his plan has been approved by a Saudi Arabian cleric. According to Aouragh, his proposed sex shop is halal because “In our case, this has nothing to do with food. It has to do with the fact that our products are permissible by Islamic law and the Islamic religion. Therefore all our products are maintaining the integrity, pure humanity and ethics inherent with the Sharia.”

Although the name of the cleric was not released, and it’s hard to confirm the likelihood of this happening, however the word has gone viral, and despite what you make think of this conservative society, there are thousands of lingerie shops in Saudi Arabia.
