Egyptian Researcher Wins Newton Prize by Tackling Liver Cancer

Earlier this month,  an Egyptian became the first to win the Newton Prize. Focused on tackling health, climate and developmental issues, the Newton Prize celebrates the UK's collaboration with researchers across Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, South Africa and Turkey, splitting over a million British pounds between them to help them develop on their achievements. And this year, Dr. Marco Zaki was able to claim the award for his work in battling liver cancer.

Through his teamwork with Newcastle University, and in collaboration with Cancer Research UK and Medimmune Alliance, Dr. Zaki was able to develop a diagnostic/therapeutic antibody which could improve the life expectancy for half the patients who suffer from liver cancer.  As if that wasn’t enough of a feat in and of itself, Dr. Zaki has donated half of his share of the prize money to establish a research lab in Minia University, while the other half will be dedicated to his research on liver cancer.

Since the announcement, Dr. Zaki has been praised across social media platforms in Minia and earning him the moniker of “Marco, the Great Egyptian.”
