Egyptian Journalists Syndicate Names Prize After Shireen Abu Akleh

During a memorial service for the late Palestinian reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate announced that they will honour her memory by creating a special prize in her name.

The head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate reiterated the organisation’s condolences to Abu Akleh’s family, Palestinian colleagues and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, and called for the international community to hold those responsible for Abu Akleh’s death accountable.

Born 1971 to Palestinian Arab Christian parents in Jerusalem, Abu Akleh studied in the United States and in Jordan before returning to Palestine to pursue a career in journalism. Abu Akleh covered the conflict for over 25 years until she was shot and killed while reporting on an Israeli operation in the West Bank. During that same incident, Palestinian journalist Ali Samoudi was also shot, and is currently receiving treatment.
