Egypt to Supply Lebanon with Natural Gas to Ease Power Crisis

Egypt will deliver natural gas to Lebanon within a few weeks via the Arab Gas Pipeline, in an effort to ease the Lebanese power crisis which has been ongoing since July, after an agreement was reached between Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Lebanon’s recently-appointed Minister of Energy and Water Walid Fayyad.

The pipeline, which goes through Syria and Jordan, is not currently active. But as per this new agreement, the transported gas will be taken to northern Lebanon through the pipeline to reactive gas-operated power plants that have not been functioning for 11 years.

Egypt achieved self-sufficiency in natural gas in 2018, with current natural gas production totalling 7.2 billion cubic feet per day. The boom in Egypt’s production followed the discovery of the giant Zohr field in the Mediterranean Sea, which is believed to be the largest ever gas discovery made in the sea.
