Egypt to Start Clinical Trials of Japanese Drug that May Cure Coronavirus

Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of High Education and Scientific Research, revealed on Thursday, April 9th, that Egypt has acquired samples of the Japanese drug, Avigan, in order to conduct clinical trials on its effect on the novel Coronavirus.

The first batch of the drug arrived last month, with a new shipment due to arrive soon. The trials will be done in cooperation with Tokyo. The drug itself is not a new product and has been in use for some time primarily for fighting invading viruses through the process of virus division.

Abdel Ghaffar also stated that Egypt has put in orders for shipments of the raw materials which Avigan is produced from, indicating that Egypt is preparing to produce the drug locally.
