Egypt to Provide Medical and Psychosocial Care for 12,500 Homeless Children with Mobile Care Units
The initiative comes as a collaboration between the ministry and French organisation, Samusocial International.
Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity has signed a cooperation protocol with Samusocial International in Egypt, a French organisation that’s been registered in Egypt since 2008, to provide homeless children care through mobile units offering night and day medical and psychosocial therapy.
The ministry released a statement announcing that the initiative are targeting children in Cairo, Giza, Qalyobia, Sharqia, Alexandria, Menoufia, Assuit, Beni Seuf, Port Said, Ismailia, and Suez. The cooperation serves as part of Long Live Egypt fund, a social initiative founded in 2014 by the Egyptian government to aid in supporting Egypt’s economy and support social justice.
Samusocial International will provide employees of the mobile units and social care homes with training, while the children will also have the opportunity to participate in educational and cultural programs and activities held in social care homes. The initiative was launched in 2016 by the Egyptian government, with its first phase targeting an estimate of more than 12,500 children, according to Egypt Today.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that there are tens of thousands of street children, with Egypt representative, Bruno Maes, explaining that “the main factors pushing the children out of their homes are domestic violence, abuse and poverty. In general, it affects households experiencing unemployment, drug use, low or no education.’’
