If you’ve been travelling through Cairo recently you might have spotted something big, green and shiny rolling through the streets.

Proudly standing out from the dusty mass of cars and scooters, Egypt’s new public transport buses are fuelled by electric power and natural gasses. And while they’ve been making the rounds in Cairo, they’ll soon find their way all throughout Egypt. The Ministry of Local Development has announced that 100 new electric buses are being introduced to Egypt’s cities, with plans currently underway to transform the country’s public transport systems.

These electric buses are the product of a USD 200 million investment by Egypt and the World Bank, which were set aside for projects to improve air quality in Cairo. The investment is also going towards an advanced complex for waste recycling, treatment and disposal in 10th of Ramadan city for solid, hazardous, medical and construction waste, which is being built over 1,200 feddans.
