Egypt to Launch Electronic Waste System As Part of LE12 Billion Investment

The Ministry of Local Development allocated LE 12 billion, or $761 million, to the implementation of various new waste management systems in Egypt back in January. Within those new strategies, a new electronic waste, has recently been announced to be in its preliminary phase. The details of the plan will be announced in two months time, but we already know that Egyptians will no longer be throwing away their phones, computers, or tablets with their normal trash.

After learning of the investment, we’re now just days away from seeing the fruit of these investments with the launching of the first new system of solid waste in multiple governorates launching in the next few months.

Along with all the new waste programmes, a medical waste collection system is also in preparation and will aim to put a stop to burning the waste, which has negative impact on the environment, but must still shield the dangerous medical waste from direct contact with garbage workers which could contract diseases as a result.

Minister of Local Development, Mahmoud Sharaawy, announced that 26 landfills have already been eliminated nationwide, when he made the announced the huge investment budget. The government is determined to close any remaining unsafe landfills in the Cairo and Giza area, and turn them into public service facilities instead. Will we finally be bidding goodbye to the heaping rubbish piles that have become almost signature to Cairo curbsides? We can only hope so.
