Egypt to Host Three Tournaments for Athletes with Visual Impairments

Athletes from across the world are set to descend on Egypt this March - but not the kind of athletes we see splashed across social media. There are athletes with visual impairments.

Between March 22nd and 29th, three international tournaments are set to take place in Egypt: the Pyramids International Championship for Weightlifting, the Pyramids International Championship for Judo and, the Pyramids International Championship in Goalball, the latter a sport that is specifically conceived and designed for athletes with visual impairments.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Youth & Sports, which will host the tournaments in collaboration with the Egyptian Blind Sport Federation and Egyptian Judo Federation. The ministry has, in recent times, made a concerted effort to spotlight and support Egyptian athletes with visual impairments or disabilities at a grass-roots level, in order to build on the kind of success that Egyptian athletes have enjoyed at championships such as the Paralympics. Since 1960, Egyptian athletes have gone home 183 medals, 49 of them gold.
