Egypt to Construct Largest Fibre Optic Cable Plant in MENA Region

As if it wasn't enough to have one of the biggest solar panel parks in the world, Egypt is set to build the largest fibre optic cable plant in the Middle East and North Africa region, which will span 50,000 sqm and be located in the seaside town of Ain El-Sokhna. Over EGP 1 billion has been invested in the project.

The plant is planned to begin operations in the third quarter of 2021, and is made because of a deal of cooperation between the state-owned Arab Organisation for Industrialisation and the IT service provider, Benya Capital. The yearly capacity of production for the project is four million KM of cables.

This is part of a wider governmental goal to improve the industrial sector, as well as to boost local technology and minimise imports. The project is also expected to create many job opportunities for budding technicians and engineers. Furthermore, the manufacturing of the fibre optic cables is set to service the power, gas, telecommunications and oil local industries, in addition to upcoming cities the country is building.

This project is expected to play a major role in ensuring that the economic zone around the Suez Canal area will become an international industrial hub, hopefully leading to further foreign investment.  You know what they say - go big or go home (or stay home if you’re still in quarantine, that’s also an option).
