Egypt’s Red Sea Mountain Trail Named on Time Magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places in 2019’ List

Time Magazine has officially named Sinai’s Red Sea Mountain Trail on its sweeping 'World's Greatest Places 2019' list. The trail was developed over five years and founded earlier this year by British geographer, Ben Hoffler, with the help of Egyptian mountaineer and adventurer, Omar Samra.

Headed by Sheikh Merayi Abu Musallem of the Bedouin Khushmaan tribe of Maaza, the the operation and ongoing development of the 170 km, 10-day trail is also managed by the tribe.

The trail, is also Mainland Egypt’s first long-distance trail, and follows the success of sister project and award-winning Sinai Trail which launched in 2015 in the mountains of St. Catherine.

“I’m very proud to have been a part of the team that put it together and I hope it'll help the Red Sea Mountain Trail grow and encourage Egypt to take this kind of tourism seriously - giving it the support it truly needs," Hoffler said in a Facebook post. "I hope it'll also underline how modern tourism can be mobilised to protect the ancient, critically-endangered heritage of nomadic peoples around the world. It'd be great to see more projects like it. Big congrats to the Maaza Bedouin who walked so far to create the trail - esp. to Mohammed Muteer, Suleman Abu Salah, Hassan Musallem & Sheikh Merayi Abu Musallem - and the amazing community of people from Egypt & beyond who supported us on the way. It was never easy."
