Egypt’s Ahmed Malek to Star in Australian Film ‘The Furnace’

Egyptian actor, Ahmed Malek, has been announced as part of the cast for upcoming Australian film, The Furnace, alongside veteran actor, David Weham, who many will recognise from roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and 300.

Described as an adventure movie set in 1890s Australia, the film follows a Muslim Afghan who forms an unlikely partnership with a bushman, and will explore the ‘forgotten multi-cultural history of Australia’.

The film will be the debut feature for Perth-based filmmaker, Roderick MacKay, who, despite his relative inexperience, is considered one of the country’s most promising filmmakers and is known for his rich visual style, which is owed to his background in visual arts and graphic design.

This is not Malek’s first non-Egyptian role; he also starred as an Egyptian foreign exchange student discovering Canada’s underground subcultures in indie comedy-drama, Montreal Girls.
