Egypt Cuts Opening Hours for Restaurants, Shops & Malls

In a bid to reduce public gatherings, and to encourage Egyptians to #StayHome, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli has announced that all restaurants, cafes, food trucks and carts, shopping malls, non-essential retailers, casinos, cabarets, nightclubs, sports clubs and theme parks will shut their doors between 7pm and 6am daily, until the end of March.

Effective immediately, this cut to opening hours applies across the entirety of Egypt, following the complete closure of gyms, cultural venues, cinemas and similar spaces where events are usually held.

Supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries and other food retailers will remain open as usual, to ensure that essential goods are readily available. Some restaurants will also keep their delivery services running at their usual hours.

This move comes as Egypt’s total Coronavirus cases reach 210 (at the time of writing), and airports across the country dispatch their final flights before complete closure tonight, until the end of March.
