Construction Begins on Egypt’s First High Speed Train Project

Construction on Egypt’s first high-speed train project is underway, with work on the train’s road path as well as its stations having already begun. The first two phases of the project are scheduled for completion within the next 18 months and will provide high-efficiency rail transport stretching from Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh. With 20 stations being built across 660 kilometres of railroad, passengers will be able to board and disembark from trains at a number of stops including the New Administrative Capital, 6th of October City, Alexandria, Borg El Arab and Alamein.

Following the greatest overhaul of Egypt’s locomotive system since its implementation in the 1850s, the four-part project will eventually provide 1000 kilometres of railroad for high-speed transport of up to 250 kilometres per hour. Passengers will be able to journey from as far north as Alexandria to as far south as Aswan.
