Cairo University Moves Up Almost 100 Places in Academic Ranking of World Universities

Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s annual Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has placed Cairo University in the 301-400 category for 2019, marking an almost 100 position rise from last year and its highest ever ranking.

The university had only previously been ranked in the 401-500 category in previous years, with ARWU ranking the top universities around the world since 2003, based on what it calls “transparent methodology and objective third-party data.”

The criteria for the rankings are based on the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, and the per capita performance of the university.

While the rankings had previously only published the top 500 universities, this year it has been expanded to include the top 1000 out of 1800 analysed.

Other Egyptian universities featured on the list include Ain Shams and Alexandria (701-800 category), as well as Mansoura (801-900 category) and Zagazig (901-1000 category).
