Cairo Removes 700,000 Cubic Metres of Trash from Magra El-Oyoun

Magra El-Oyoun, the Mamluk-era aqueduct surrounding the Citadel of Cairo, is undergoing extensive renovations to transform it into a tourist hub. But before that can happen, the General Authority for Cleanliness and Beautification of Cairo - in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities - sent a crew of cleaners to remove the accumulation of trash and waste that has been built up along the wall over the past 30 years. After 15 days of work by 60 workers, Cairo has managed to remove over 700,000 cubic metres of waste around the historic aqueduct.

The clean-up hopes to put Magra El-Oyoun's heritage in the best possible light in anticipation of its long-awaited makeover, which will include the construction of two theatres, cinemas, restaurants, markets, art galleries, multipurpose halls and studios.
