Cairo Ranked World's Most Dangerous City for Women

A poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, which surveyed 19 mega cities - cities with populations of 10 million people or more, found that Cairo is the worst place for women to live while London is the best. Key factors used in the survey were sexual violence, harmful cultural practices, access to good healthcare, finance, and good education.

Cairo was ranked the worst city overall for women, and specifically in harmful cultural practices. It was also ranked third worst after Delhi and Sao Paulo in sexual violence, third worst after Lima and Kinshasa and tied with Karachi in access to healthcare and second worst after Kinshasa in economic opportunities.

Many experts point out that treatment of women has worsened since the Arab Spring movement in 2011. "Everything about the city is difficult for women. We see women struggling in all aspects. Even a simple walk down the street, and they are subjected to harassment, whether verbal or even physical," Shahira Amin, a high-profile Egyptian journalist, a women's rights advocate, and contributor to the survey stated.
