Cairo Citadel’s Soaring Aqueducts Are Getting a Facelift

As part of Egypt’s plans to transform the historic Magra El-Oyoun Fence - the aqueduct around the Cairo Citadel - into a cultural tourist hub, the Mamluk-era aqueduct underwent a full cleanup courtesy of the General Authority for Cleanliness and Beautification of Cairo. Equipped with heavy equipment and automatic sweepers, the General Authority has begun the process of removing all of the waste and garbage that has accumulated over the past 30 years in and around the wall.

Further developments are in the works for Magra El-Oyoun, including the construction of two theatres, cinemas, restaurants, markets, art galleries, multipurpose halls and studios.
