Aswan is Hosting its 25th International Sculpture Symposium

Did you know about the Aswan International Sculpture Symposium? Did you know that it has been happening every single year for 25 years? Well, it's a thing, and a very cool thing at that. Having kicked off this week, the symposium will run until February 22nd, and brings together top local and international sculptors, with this year's edition welcoming the likes of Ton Kalla, Nathan Doss, Hassan Kamel and Ali Nouri.

There are few better cities in Egypt to hold an event of this kind and over thousands of years, Aswan has been a source of visually stunning, malleable rocks found in quarries, which are now touristic sites. Since the time of the Ancient Egyptians, these rocks were used to create the most pivotal obelisks and sculptures of Egyptian history. Launched in 1998 by Adam Hunein, this symposium proudly pays homage to the incredible and ancient art of sculpting, where granite is the main material used in the sculpting process. This year, the symposium will host the likes of renowned sculptors

One of the highlight elements of the symposium, will see sculptors invited to work their magic and create sculptures out of granite throughout the duration of the symposium. The theme and visualisation of the sculptures is completely up to the sculptors, who are encouraged to let their creativity loose throughout the process. At the end of the symposium every year, awards and certificates are distributed among the participating artists, in recognition of their contributions to the field. If you're a budding or established sculptor interested in participating, pay their website a visit, where you'll find all the info you need.
