Arabic YouTube Channel Makes Football Accessible For the Hearing Impaired

Karim Naguib is a fervent football fan, but local broadcasts haven't always considered his hearing impairment. To remedy this, Naguib created a YouTube channel called 'Shawir weh Share' ('Sign and Share') that provides Arabic football commentary translated into sign language that is tailored uniquely for an audience that is deaf, or whose hearing is impaired.

According to the United Nations, about 7.5 million people in Egypt have some form of hearing impairment. "They should be able to join in the conversation with everyone else who can hear and understand the commentary," Naguib told Shorouk News.

To this end, Naguib assembled a team to launch the YouTube channel, which began on November 26th. The crew includes Naguib as the analyst, Muhammad Alaa as the sign language translator, Ayman Saad as the editor, and Muhamed Al-Kashef as the director and set designer. They already have two episodes up covering local matches, although Naguib hopes they'll be able to put out episodes on European football soon.
