An Inside Look at the COP27 Preparations in Sharm El Sheikh

The countdown to COP27 has officially begun. This monumental gathering of global change-makers and decision-drivers will of course be taking place in Sharm El Sheikh from November 6th to November 18th. Following months of international buzz we are finally getting our first glimpse of the sprawling setting for a series of discussions, deliberations, connections and conversations that transcend politics. This, ultimately, is a conference about the protection and survival of our planet for future generations. It is about unity of purpose and cohesiveness of vision. And out here by the shores of Egypt’s Red Sea, preparations are well underway to create space for change, inspiration and hope. Space for meaningful implementation.

Naturally there are countless leaders and creators working together to realize an event of this global scale and size. Amongst those overseeing the preparations are Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Egypt’s Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad who arrived in Sharm El Shiekh this weekend to oversee the progress at the conference’s pivotal ‘Blue’ and ‘Green’ zones. The Blue Zone will play host to global governmental discussions, the Green Zone is where grassroots voices of change have a platform. And while the themes and topics between the both ‘zones’ are naturally aligned, the Green Zone is where youth, entrepreneurs, civil and indigenous societies, academics and artists the world over can express themselves. A safe space that actively promotes dialogue, awareness, education and commitment through a diverse array of events, exhibitions, workshops, cultural performances and talks.

For the first time in the history of COP these two zones will be a stone’s throw from one other (a literal three minute e-bike ride or 10 minute walk) reflecting the importance placed on the impact of the individual on the very future of humanity.

Over the coming days and weeks, CairoScene will be taking you inside COP 27’s Green Zone showcasing the many individuals, organizations and movements that are working together to affect meaningful change for all of us. And for the generations that will come after us.
