Alexandria Aims for World Record with Biggest Beach Cleanup Ever

Egypt’s biggest-ever beach cleanup campaign just took place on the coast of Alexandria! The Ministry of Environment teamed up with local conservation group Banlastic and other civil society organisations to try and break a new Guinness World Record by cleaning eight beaches over five kilometres during World Cleanup Day.

200 volunteers collected approximately 3000 to 4000 kilograms of plastic waste from Sidi Bishr to Mandara, which will be recycled through Plastic Bank, a company that constructs recycling ecosystems.

The campaign is currently registering the record-breaking attempt with the Guinness Book of World Records.

World Cleanup Day is a UN-recognised initiative that is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September. The global campaign aims to raise awareness of the global solid waste crisis, including those that threaten the marine environment by encouraging mass cleanup events like this.
