Acroyoga is the Coolest New Exercise in Town

Tightening the threads between movement, connection and play is the hip and holistic Acro Egypt. The group is the first to bring in the yoga-acrobatic concept into the country, and has hosted numerous classes and workshops spreading the unique exercise across Egypt.

Acro Egypt was founded in 2015 by yogi-couple Nicolas Gallois and Hoda Wahby, the latter being a certified physical education and yoga teacher in Egypt and the former practicing Vinyasa yoga - a flow-focused variation of the exercise - from a young age.

“As a social practice, Acroyoga can be used to foster trust, courage and responsibility among human beings inside and outside the mat,” Gallois told us, speaking on the partner-focused element of the exercise. Acroyoga is a mix of three traditions: yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage. The partnered yoga practice was first started in 2003 by American yogis Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer.

Together, they operate in Cairo, Alexandria, Sinai, and by the Red Sea with monthly workshops and classes. Their star event, though, is the annual Spring camp held in El Gouna, which hosts acroyoga, therapeutics and massage, gymnastics, meditation and pranayama, and other wellness activities— the second edition of the camp will be held this May during Eid al-Fitr. If breaking a sweat while getting in touch with your soul mate by the blue sea looks this good, we’re down for a downward dog or two.
