AUC Hands Over 5,000 Artefacts to National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation

The Egyptian Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) has received over 5,000 Pharaonic, Islamic, Coptic, Greek and Roman artefacts from the American University in Cairo (AUC), much of which will go on display at the Fustat-located museum.

The artefacts have been under the legal ownership of AUC after an Egyptian-American excavation mission – headed by professor emeritus at AUC’s Department of Arab and Islamic Civilisations, George Scanlon – uncovered the artefacts in during the 1960s in the Fustat area.

Among the artefacts is pottery shards, fabric, fragments of glass, beads and coins, as well as lusterware – a type of pottery or porcelain finished with a metallic glaze. Some of the pieces will go on display imminently, while others will be restored as needed.
