A 3,700-Year-Old Pyramid Was Just Discovered South of Cairo

The 13th dynasty structure is Ancient Egypt's first attempt at building a smooth-sided pyramid.

An ancient pyramid dating back some 3,700 years (13th dynasty) was just unearthed by an excavation team at the Dahshur Royal Necropolis, south of Cairo. According to a statement by the head of the Ancient Egyptian Antiquities Sector Mahmoud Afifi on Monday, Al Jazeera reports.

The pyramid, which was discovered in Dahshur's Royal Necropolis, an Ancient Egyptian burial site located 40 km south of Cairo, is believed to be one of first attempts to build a smooth-sided pyramid, the statement explained.

The remains of the pyramid are part of its inner structure, as well as blocks showing the interior design of the pyramid.
