6 Egyptian Billionaires Land on Forbes List of Richest Africans

Forbes has just released their 2017 list of Africa’s 50 richest people on the continent, and this year Egyptian billionaires have swept up six of the top positions.

The Forbes list features Africa's 50 richest individuals; of those 50, 21 are billionaires and 6 of those billionaires are Egyptians. Representing the six Egyptian positions are the three Sawiris brothers, Nassef, Naguib, and Onsi, along with the three Mansour brothers, Mohamed, Yasseen and Youssef.

Combined, the Sawiris’ current accumulated wealth amounts to $10.06 billion across construction, chemical, and telecom industries, while the Mansours hold $5.61 billion across diversified industries.

Equivalent to our listing is South Africa who also holds six places across luxury, retail, mining and media sectors, though their collective net worth is higher than that of the Egyptians; combined, the South Africans have an accumulated wealth of $22.7 billion, compared to Egypt’s $15.7 billion.

Topping the list, again, is Nigerian Aliko Dangote with an accumulated wealth of $12.1 billion. Among the 20 richest, Isabel dos Santos (Angola) and Foloruncho Alakija (Nigeria) were the only two women featured.

According to Forbes however, the overall wealth of Africa’s billionaires is continuing to drop. In 2015, African billionaires amounted to $79.8 billion, and this year that number sits at $70 billion.
