Muslim Brotherhood Faces UK Ban

The Muslim Brotherhood is facing a possible UK crackdown after British officials launched a probe into the group's activities. The move comes following comments by former MI6 boss Sir Richard Dearlove branding the group "at heart, a terrorist organisation".

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has ordered Whitehall officials to investigate allegations that the Muslim Brotherhood was behind the murder of three tourists on a bus in Egypt in February and that it planned extremist activities from Britain. A senior government source said: "The prime minister has ordered a review to get a better understanding of the Muslim Brotherhood and its values – and look into its alleged links to extremism."

The British Foreign Office has so far resisted banning the organisation on the grounds that that could encourage extremists. Officials now say it is "possible" that the Muslim Brotherhood will be banned in Britain on the grounds of terrorist links. The Muslim Brotherhood has until now used the UK as a base following the decision by the Egyptian and Saudi governments to ban the group.
