The Mohamed Abla Prize For Young Artists Showcases at the Greek Campus

Egyptian legendary artist and founder of the Fayoum Art Centre, Mohamed Abla, makes a mark at the GrEEK Campus, where he inaugurates the Mohamed Abla Prize and an exhibition of experimental work, paintings, and mixed media artwork created by Egyptian artists under the age of 30. “We aim to encourage artists to pursue their passion. Art is important for people to awaken,” says the artist, who has also created the Middle East’s only museum of Cartoons, Fayoum Caricature Museum. Selected among 260 applicants, the 16 contestants will be assessed by a jury composed of artists Ahmed Badry, Hany Rashid, Mohamed Abla himself, and Ahmed Aldab, Manager of O’Porto Gallery in Zamalek.

The prize offers 16 artists the chance to exhibit their work at the GrEEK Campus, while participating for cash awards. The first place winner goes home with 20,000 LE, whereas the second prize consists of a two-week residency in Abla’s Fayoum Centre, which he founded 10 years ago to spread the artistic spirit in the Arab world. “We have more art schools than ever before and artists are flourishing. Knowledge about art is expanding and people are more aware,” says the painter, as he sets up the gallery for art enthusiasts to uncover the novelty work.

The exhibition, set at the GrEEK Campus Library in Downtown Cairo, will be available for 10 days starting today.
