The Language of Flowers

When a book makes the New York Times' Bestseller list, you know you have to read it ASAP, before Hollywood gets its hands on it, casts Jennifer Lawrence and turns it into a forgettable film that someone, someday will buy for you on DVD when they forgot to buy you an actual birthday gift. Nip this terrible cycle in the bud and pick up Vanessa Diffenbaugh's The Language of Flowers now.

Diffenbaugh's debut novel is a whimsical tale of protagonist Victoria Jones who, despite a difficult upbringing, in and out of foster homes, has a very special gift for gardening. Flowers are her forte, and with her emancipation at 18 years of age, she finds roses, honeysuckles and asters (and all the meaning they held in Victorian England, where the novel is set) to be the perfect vehicle for connecting with others around her. A florist soon notices her extraordinary talent for changing people's lives through the choice of flowers she recommends to them and hires her. But before Victoria can enjoy her new-found profession, a mysterious vendor meets her at the market and encourages her to think about herself for once. With his persuasion, Victoria confronts a painful secret from her past and has to decided whether or not to risk everything for a shot at happiness. This is a tear-jerker, so consider yourself warned.
