The Dream of the Celt

While we normally devote our reading time to finding out what Dalia Does or what makes Hassan Hassan so Caireless, every now and then we pick up an actual book. But because we’re a little pretentious, the words “Nobel Prize” usually have to be involved. So when we heard that the prize winning Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa’s new book The Dream of the Celt is now in English AND available at Diwan Bookstores, we decided it was time to take up books again.

Set in 1916, The Dream of the Celt relays the story of Roger Casement, who spent his life working to expose the injustices facing the native populations of the Belgian Congo and the Amazon. But the British government decided Casement crossed the line when he compared the plight of the colonised people to those of Northern Ireland. Casement was tried for treason and hanged by the government, leaving his reputation tarnished for decades. The moving novel, by one of Latin America’s most famed authors of all time, pits nationalism against humanitarianism for a thrilling read.

The Dream of the Celt is available at all Diwan Bookstores for 121 EGP.
