Hitan Transforms City Walls with Explosive Murals

Breaking boundaries by building up gorgeous wall art, Hitan Art Collective is beautifying the sides of Cairo’s massive buildings with their unique style. They’ve set themselves apart by borrowing from the age-old Egyptian tradition of painted advertisements, and applying them with modern art techniques and graffiti to form a new visual language and create captivating artworks all over the city.

If you've visited The Drive by the Waterway in New Cairo, you'll have noticed the huge graffiti work plastered on the metal containers of each vendor. Called ‘The Container Project’, this modern concept was implemented by Hitan and Artiora to create vibrant murals on over nine different units.

Their work for Knorr, however, takes an entirely different approach. Going back to basics, they were able to paint a 814 square metre mural depicting the good old Egyptian countryside in just five days on a building on the Ring Road. The painting draws on the vintage style of Golden Age movie posters, sprinkled with the spirit of classical painters like Mohamed Nagy. With their artistic approach, Hitan has been elevating Egypt’s advertisements, moving away from the stock images that dominate Cairo’s billboards and embracing our aesthetic roots.
