Films for V-Day Lovers & Haters

How does one compile a list of movies to watch on Valentine's Day when the world seems divided into people who love it and people who hate it? This dichotomy has left us thinking that the best way to compile a list is by splitting into two: five movies for lovers, and five movies for haters.

For Lovers:

(2010) Valentine's Day

From the makers of the beloved Love Actually, comes the exact same film, but with a different actors and instead of Christmas, surprise, surprise, this takes place on Valentine's Day. What do you need to know? Nothing... Just another film with varied tales of lovers intertwining.

Sleepless in Seattle(1993) or You've Got Mail (1998)

These movies both have Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan finding each other through the unlikeliest of mediums. For those who are older and remember the radio, then we suggest Sleepless in Seattle. For those of you who have never heard of the radio, because you are on your computer all the time, then we recommend You've Got Mail. Spoiler alert: they fall in love in both, but only in one of these films does big business win.

The Notebook (2004)

Nothing gets girls in the mood like Ryan Gosling, especially when he is an adorable poor person, who manages to secure a rich young woman, ultimately setting her free to make out in the rain. This film is beautifully shot, and although the story isn't original, Ryan Gosling's face is.

Her (2013)

This film is the perfect love story for all you out there desperate to make a connection, even if it is with an operating system. This film is directed by Spike Jonze, a director that never fails to impress. This film is quickly becoming the most talked about film in box offices, and would make for a great date night.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

This film is a classic. Two lovers get into a fight and surgically erase their memories of each other. This film proves that true love can still exist and reinforces the idea that we all have a soulmate out in the world. Guaranteed to make you temporarily feel that the person watching with you is your soulmate... with sexy results.

FOR HATERS:

My Bloody Valentine

We know the name is a little misleading, but this film is a cult classic. It's about a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day. For all you haters this film is a must, as surely you have had thoughts of killing annoying couples that believe their feelings can only be expressed with a pink teddy bear. Beware: this film is bloody.

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

What better way to celebrate how much you hate Valentine's Day then by doing drugs, and watching this gripping film of lives being destroyed by drugs? We guarantee that by the end of this shocking film the last thing you will be thinking about is love.

Blue Valentine (2010)

Even haters seem to like Ryan Gosling, so here is a film for any girls out there who feel like sharing in his pain. It isn't often that he stars in a film where his heart is broken and stays broken, which is why this film is great to watch alone: if Ryan Gosling can't find true love, then one can assume that love is dead.

Valentine (2001)

Another deceptive film, where instead of finding love, the film is about unsuspecting women finding themselves being stalked and killed leading up to Valentine's Day. The movie received pretty bad reviews, but that was probably because those who reviewed it probably love Valentine's Day and just can't relate to a psycho killer.

Kill Bill (2003)

This film is simply bad ass. A bride is left for dead on her wedding day, and eventually awakes to exact revenge on all of those who ruined the most special of days. There's tonnes of blood and very little love, so if you hate Valentine's Day this is the film for you.
