Downtown Cairo: Rags Are the New Riches

Everything is recyclable in art and life. A bad breakup, a tormented childhood, the death of a pet – especially one for which you are partly (read: fully) responsible – can all be recycled into beautiful art. Same goes for those disposable cups from your last house party or that paper you used to write your now-happily-married-ex a strongly-worded letter demanding your CDs and Batman socks back.

In fact, Downtown Cairo and Al-Ismailia for Real Estate Investment are teaming up with Mashrabia Contemporary Art Gallery and Baad El Bahr for Cultural Development (BEBA) to hold an art installation titled Rags to Riches in the Kodak Passageway just to prove the above and show you that green is the new black. Starting July 10th, beautiful intricate art will adorn the Passageway as five artists take your run-of-the-mill recycled items and turn them into dreamlike visual creations. Rags to Riches runs until August and is not to be missed.

So, if deep down you are a tree-hugging climate change believer but you keep it to yourself because you don’t have the time or the energy to explain to everybody how science works – come out, come out, wherever you are! The Passageway is waiting.
