If you like your stage shows to get a little surreal and bend the rules to give you a unique avant-garde experience, you might be excited to hear that the annual Cairo International Festival for Contemporary & Experimental Theatre is returning for its 27th edition at the National Theatre in Attaba. Running between September 1st and September 11th, the festival will be the theatre's first big event since the Coronavirus outbreak, and will feature Egyptian director Sami Taha, Lebanese director Maya Zbib and Swiss director Milo Rao (the artistic director of the major NTGent Performance Theatre in Belgium) as guests of honour, among other world-renowned playwrights, directors and dramatists.

Some of the plays that got accepted into the festival this year include ‘Al-Warda W El-Tag’ directed by Ibrahim Ashraf, ‘Al-Shate’, directed by Diaa El-Din Zakaria and an experimental adaptation of ‘Raya w Sakina’ directed by Karima Badir. This year, the festival will honour the late Egyptian theatre critic and professor, Dr. Hassan Attia.
