Between Two Seas to Take National Tour for Women’s Day

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, 'Between Two Seas', directed by Anas Tolba, will be taking a national tour of Egypt’s governorates. The tour kicked off on March 2nd in Assiut’s Al-Hawatkeh village, which will be followed by Fayoum’s Mandara village on March 7th before its biggest three screenings  held in Cairo’s Darb 1718, the Dutch Flemish Institute and the Library of Alexandria. The tour also goes through the governorates of Sharkia, Tanta and Kafr el Sheikh.

The plot follows a mother, Zahra, whose daughter dies after being subjected to FGM. In an effort to restore her daughter’s honour, Zahra completes her education and goes out to teach her community about the socio-cultural obstacles that women face in Egypt.

The widely-acclaimed work was made possible because of a collaboration between the National Council for Women and United Nations Women, with a common goal to use the influence of cinema to shift cultural attitudes towards women.

The film has collected a stunning amount of awards both regionally and internationally with two wins at the Brooklyn Film Festival, the Nūt Award for Best Film, best director at the Aswan International Film Festival for Women, and two awards at the Festival International du Cinéma de la Diversité Taza in Morocco. Tolba’s film also participated in other festivals held in Spain, Germany, Jordan, Palestine and Italy.
