5th Annual Luxor African Film Festival Lineup Announced

The Luxor African Film Festival is a project of the Independent Shabab Foundation - a non-profit organisation - focusing on screening African films, which are normally not seen, in Egypt. Luxor was seen as tragically deficient in cultural or artistic events, thus it is a prime location - both geographically and culturally - to show films from the rest of the continent.

The 5th version of the Luxor African Film Festival is set to happen on the 17th - 23rd of March. The event will honour Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, Ivorian director Henri Duparc, and Moroccan critic Mustafa Al-Mesnawy. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the very first film Ivorian film, Côte D’Ivoire will be celebrated as a guest of honour.

The Long Narrative Competition will be judged by Guinea-Bissauan director Flora Gomes, Senegalese director Moussa Touré, Moroccan actor Driss Roukhe, Egyptian actress Sawsan Badr, and Egyptian director Magdy Ahmed Aly. They will be presiding over 13 films in the category: Algerian Reveries of the Solitary Actor by Hamid Benamra; Ivorian Without Regret by Jacques Trabi; Malian Shadow of Madness by Boubacar Gakou; Moroccan Starve Your Dog by Hicham Lasri; Namibian The Unseen by Perivi John Katjavivi; Nigerian The Missing God by Ubaka Joseph Ugochukwu; Nigerian Mona by Anthony Abuah; and the opening film of the festival, Egyptian Nawara by Hala Khalil.

The jury of the Long Documentary Competition is composed of Pedro Pimenta, a producer from Mozambique; film critic Hans-Christian Mahnke from Germany; Egyptian directors Jihan El-Tahri and Khaled El-Hagar; and Egyptian director of photography Wael Saber.

The Long Documentary Competition includes Cameroonian Funeral of My Father by Lorenzo Mbiahou and Milosine Tchetkou; Egyptian Never Were They Not Children by Mahmoud Soliman; Kenyan The Last Fight by Jackie Lebo; Malian Duty to Remember by Mamadou Cissé; Moroccan The Bread Road by Hicham Elladdaqi; Moroccan The Women of the Clock by Raja Sediki; Senegalese Sembene by Jason Silverman and Samba Gadjigo; Tunisian The Four Seasons by Mohamed Zran; Moroccan Roundabout in My Head by Hassen Ferhani; Guinean A Man for My Family by Thierno Souleymane Diallo; Malagasy Rendala, le Mikea by Alain Rakotoarisoa; Nigerian Rock Inspired by Famous Odion Iraoya; and Burkinabe The Siren of Faso Fani by Michel Zongo.

This year’s Freedom Competition will be headed by the American actor Danny Glover, and features Netflix’s original film Beast of No Nation by Cary Joji Fukunaga.
