Boldly opening under the slogan “Cinema in the Face of Terrorism” the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival is currently showcasing a wide variety of international and domestic films that are sure to excite cinema-lovers around the nation from the 3rd to the 9th of September.

The 31st installment of the festival was launched on Wednesday night at the iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Opening the festival was Culture Minister Abdel Wahid al-Nabawi and film critic Amir Abaza, who dedicated this year’s festival to film star Mahmoud Yassin, ahead of the screening of “120 Years of Cinema.” Also being honoured this year is a variety of notable filmmakers including Egyptian director Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Russian director Shakhnazarov, and Columbian actor Lou Castel, among others.

This year's festival is jam packed and is said to be hosting 300 films from 33 different countries with 15 Arab feature films competing for the late Egyptian actor Nour al-Sherif prize worth 50000LE. More than just a showcase of feature films the festival will also be screening full length documentaries, a variety of shorts, and 20 films made locally by young Alexandrian directors. Needless to say if you are cinemaddict then you will want to consider heading to Egypt's beloved Mediterranean city for a smorgasbord of cinematic culture.
