State-Owned Baby Formula Factory Will Help Cut Prices by Up to 50%

The Pharmaceuticals Chamber revealed plans for a state-owned baby formula factory in Egypt, which will be among the six largest baby formula factories in the world. Expected to begin production in a few weeks, the factory's products will be 40% to 50% less expensive than imported baby formula.

Traditionally, locally-manufactured baby formulas were exclusively available through public healthcare facilities via prescription, a measure aimed at managing their circulation in the black market. While the pack's cost is around EGP 150, it's sold at a subsidized price of EGP 5. By contrast, imported formulas are priced at EGP 250 per pack. With an estimated annual consumption of 50 million packs in Egypt, half of which are locally-made and subsidized, this initiative looks to significantly improve accessibility and affordability in the market.
